Zach Sobiech, at the age of 14, found out he had a rare form of terminal cancer. So he became a rock star, and millions of people got to see his music before he passed away on May 20, 2013. This is his beautiful story.

From Adam, our curator: You never know what to expect until you lose someone dear to your heart this way. I lost my dad to pancreatic cancer far too early. If you wouldn’t mind sharing this so more people hear Zach’s story, I’d love it. His family has requested that anyone who is interested in helping change the fate for future children like Zach donate to the research fund set up on his behalf.

I thought I would give an update on 11:11 A.M. since we haven’t had a lot of projects going on.

At the moment, everyone who volunteers their time for 11:11 A.M. (Kathleen, Angie, Mao, Leah, Melly, Marissa, and myself) are currently either in school or working full time. We do seek out organizations to donate to and keep active with that.

Sadly though, we won’t be doing another Warped Tour. I never thought I’d say that :( We will stay active in the community and keep raising money & awareness. This cause is something we all believe in and won’t stop our efforts. We will be updating this blog more often though thanks to Marissa’s involvement! We have some signed items by bands that we will work on giving away, so keep an eye out for that.

Thank you to everyone for your continuing support. It’s been a long journey and can’t believe what this organization has experienced in the past. And it couldn’t have happened without our supporters.

Everyone needs to check out our friends at the Matt Cwiertny Foundation. They have a new project up that involves music therapy and donating pre-loaded iPod nanos to patients. The music is donated by artists.

11:11 A.M. donated $300.00 yesterday to this project and love everything about it. If everyone who follows us donated $1 each, we would raise thousands. Think about it :)

Christian Bale calls Zach Guillot, an 8 year old boy battling leukemia who’s a huge Batman fan & they have the most darling conversation about rainy weather, Halloween costumes & most important, how awesome Batman is. Bale tells Zach, “Lots of different people have played him just like you and me. Everyone can share being Batman” & Zach tells Christian about how his brother likes Robin & his best friend dressed up like Catwoman for Halloween & accompanied Zach dressed as Batman in a homemade Batmobile & my grinchy heart grew three sizes!

Christian also told Zach that he would tell the director of the movies, the lady who plays Catwoman & the man who plays Bane about him so yes, my fangirly heart also grew three sizes today.

Over the last few months I’ve felt like the life was slowly being sucked out of me. Mostly due to problems/a lack of movement in my personal and professional lives. Tomorrow, however, I will literally have the life sucked out of me, and I somehow feel alive once more; like myself again.

Tomorrow I am participating in something called “peripheral stem cell apheresis”, the modern and less invasive method of bone marrow donation- effectively (if all goes well) saving a leukemia patient’s life. I don’t know who the patient is, where they are in the world, or anything about them.

Say what you will- so far I’ve received praise along the lines of “brave”, “selfless”, “generous”, etc. But only one word comes to mind: Necessary.

It’s not that I don’t see the big deal; I get it. And perhaps I’m underestimating other people’s fear of doctors and hospitals, maybe I don’t understand that some people are terrified of needles the same way that I’m afraid of heights. But when I got a call a few months ago informing me that I was a match, that I had the opportunity to save a complete strangers life for absolutely nothing in return (not to mention at my physical expense) I didn’t even hesitate to say yes.

I first became involved in cancer awareness over 7 years ago now, when the frontman of my favorite band was diagnosed with leukemia. He too, received a stem cell transplant, made a full recovery and continued to create the art I was, and still am most passionate about- music. After attending countless Jack’s Mannequin shows throughout my high school years, and a few chance happenings I eventually was lucky enough to get to know said frontman - Andrew McMahon - and later ended up with the opportunity (thanks to him and my dear friend Adam) to travel aboard the Vans Warped Tour representing Andrew’s organization, Dear Jack Foundation. An experience that was, in as few words as possible: life-changing. How crazy it is that one person’s illness and misadventure could have a direct effect on the rest of my life? Of several lives, or maybe even hundreds or thousands of lives?

About a month ago I had to have a physical exam to ascertain that I was fit to donate. The nurse conducting my health history asked me how I got involved with the national bone marrow registry. The truth is, I randomly walked through a swabbing event when I was a sophomore in college. Completely unrelated to the story above. I later explained my profession to the nurse, that I work for a music publication. “Oh, interesting that you say that,” she said. “I’ve had several- I can count on two hands how many donors have come through who said they got involved because the singer of a band had leukemia- you probably know who he is.”

Of course I do.

The universe works in mysterious ways and I know I say that all the time but the circumstances surrounding this situation are seriously unique, and a reminder of something I often forget myself- we are all connected, and every one of our actions - intentional or not - affects another.

Hello everyone! Today’s post actually is not about Backyard Heroes. A number of years back, I had another art project. It was music as well as a film. I called it Ode To An Adventure. It all started with my senior project in high school. I set out to record a concept album of my experience with cancer. However, during my senior year I wasn’t even one year off of treatment at that point. So due to growing personal struggles with the subject, it was shortened to an EP.

Ode became a concept EP that chronicles the mindset of a teenage boy as he’s faced with the possibility and eventual diagnosis of leukemia.

10 years ago today, marks the start of what you could say was the most infamous four days of my life. Today would be my first night in the hospital, which you’ll here me sing about in Answers, then finally, May 14th will be the official day of my diagnosis. I listened to the EP last night for the first time in a long time, and as you can imagine, I was overcome with a crazy amount of emotions. As tough as it is for me to listen to the stories told in these songs, I also can’t help but know that I am who I am because of this whole experience, this twisted gift. I wouldn’t change a thing.

So to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of my diagnosis, I thought it’d be special to share the story that started it all.

PS - As you can hear in the newest of Backyard Heroes songs and if you come see us live, I like to think I’ve grown a lot more as a vocalist. I was 18 when I recorded this EP and hadn’t “found my voice” just yet. Regardless, I’m still so proud of what we accomplished and how it came out. Thanks again!

For those of you who don’t know, the man in these photos is my daily inspiration; Andrew McMahon (frontman of both Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin).

Back in 2005, Andrew was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and since then has overcome his battle with absolute positivity to be where he is today.

In 2005, an organisation was formed called 11:11AM. It’s name was taken from the lyrics of the well-known Something Corporate song Konstantine - It is believed that this is the time when one should make a wish as all digits are the same. AM because in 24-hour time 11:11PM becomes 23:11, and also because it stands for the initials of our man of the hour - Andrew McMahon.

I still have my very first orange wristband which I bought in support of 11:11AM back in 2005.

Andrew never fails to amaze and inspire me, and him and and his music has saved me more times than I can count. Once upon a time I never though I’d ever get to see him perform live in Australia, let alone meet him - yet in 2007 all my dreams came true as I got to complete both those goals and have since completed them many times more.

Back in 2011 as a thankyou for me flying around to follow him on tour, Andrew rehearsed and played my favourite song in the world for me solo - Watch The Sky. I cannot express in words what that meant to me. Hopefully one day there will be another Something Corporate show somewhere in the world and I can finally hear him play Konstantine too.

You may have seen the license plate featured above before. The 3rd photo is of me which Andrew posted to his Instagram/Twitter account (“A Legit Plate”) and the 2nd is of Andrew taking the photo. He was amazed that this was my real registered West Australian license plate and that I actually had to unscrew it from my car. It took a lot of effort to get this personalised plate, but I feel so proud that I can share Andrew’s story with anyone who asks about it. I was originally going to purchase an orange plate as orange is the colour for Leukemia awareness, but instead chose blue. I’ve always associated the colour blue with Andrew as he references both the sky and the colour in many of his songs - I’d rather be reminded of those happier moments, than of a time when he was sick.

This plate is my way of sharing awareness.

My Reason to Relay

I am walking for my Grandpa. I lost him to cancer on 10/10/06. He was my best friend in the whole world and essentially who played the “father” role for me. I love him so much and miss him still every day. He was the greatest man I have ever, and probably will ever meet.

I am also walking for my favorite teacher from high school, Ms. Annable, who kicked breast cancer in the butt. GO ANNIE.

I am participating in the American Cancer Society?s Relay For Life because I want to make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.

Almost everyone has been touched by cancer, either through their own personal battle or through someone they love.

Every day, the American Cancer Society is helping us stay well by preventing cancer or finding it at its earliest, most treatable stages. They assist families in finding the best resources to help their friend or loved one deal with a diagnosis and their journey to get well. The American Cancer Society is also rallying communities (like ours!) through events like Relay For Life, to fight back and find cures for this disease.
